Canna Indica x purpura 3 Rhizomes

Canna Indica x purpura 3 Rhizomes

Canna Indica is a perennial from USDA zones 7 through 10, but may be lifted in the fall and stored in containers above freezing.  Encouraging shoots during the winter by warming can produce a protein rich food source - otherwise, the starchy roots are edible when cooked.  Flowers are also edible, appearing in late summer and continuing until frost.  The varient x purpura reaches up to nine feet high, with impressive broad purple 'touched' leaves, and multiple clusters of blooms to plese the eye, taste buds, and pollinators.  Hummingbirds find thesse flowers irresistable, and provide a display every morning for us when they are in bloom.  The stalks make excellent living trellis for runner beans and bottle gourds, and may be harvested for biomass, if flowers are not desired.
